This week I’m still going to focus on the Oxfam website, but instead of poverty in the UK I’m going to explore the floods in Albania. In late December 2009 and early 2010, close to four thousand people have been evacuated from their homes due to the worst flooding the country has experienced for half a century. In response to this, Oxfam is working on helping farmers recover their livelihoods by distributing food for the evacuated livestock. Oxfam’s main goal is to help people recover their ways of life since all of the food for the livestock and well-groomed fields are ruined by the large amounts of water that covers the regions of Shkodra and Lezha.
Oxfam is currently helping with situations all over the world. The organization also has a Twitter account to get out the news to its followers about what they can do to help, or about what Oxfam is currently working on. As of this morning, they had 21,950 followers, which means a lot of people are listening to what Oxfam is tweeting about. Of course right now the big crisis is in Haiti so a lot of the updates refer to what is currently going on in that country. One of the tweets today referenced Ushahidi and the graphic they made on their website which visually explains how they are able to help the people in need in Haiti through social media or text messaging.
I know I’ve switched from the European region to Haiti, but it’s interesting how they’re helping out in this region. They’ve made a Google map to map out where they are in Haiti and what they’ve accomplished in helping out. One example is the Delmas 48 camp which used to be a golf course, but now houses about 45,000 people who were displaced from their homes and Oxfam has set up a water distribution effort at this location.

I participated in 4 Oxfam hunger banquets throughout my high school years but never really understood the work that they do. It’s incredible that these organizations are using technology to get their services to those in need and provide communication outlets for those who are interested in the cause. I will probably end up following oxfam on Twitter myself to find out more about this issue.
Oxfam sounds like it’s doing interesting work in Albania. It’ll be interesting to see how their work progresses and how the aid is distributed.
Tracking Oxfam in Albania — for flood disaster relief. . .great project.
It’s okay to switch to Haiti — that is a theme thruout the semester
